The first time a young person logs in to MyDirections, they complete a simple self-assessment about their career readiness and select subjects, routes and sectors that interest them. MyDirections then generates content related to the young person's choices, which is displayed on their own unique homepage. The system also recommends other articles that they might be interested in. Young people can alter their choices at any time - and can also use the 'Find an article' function on the website to search for more information.
The explainer video below shows what to expect when logging into MyDirections for the first time.
As well as articles covering the full range of careers-related topics, MyDirections also has activities for students to complete. There are five career activities per year group and additional activities in the 'World of Work' section of the website. The answers students give to the questions in each activity are recorded in their MyDirections account. Students can also view employer profiles on the site, where they can hear from different companies and organisations about what it's really like to work in a particular sector. Articles, activities and employer profiles contain a mix of written information, videos and quizzes.
The CV builder on MyDirections enables students to create and save their CV to their profile. They can log in as many times as they want to finish and amend it. There are also job search articles on the site that cover everything from where to look for vacancies and writing a CV and cover letter, through to starting your first job or apprenticeship.
Parents and carers are one of biggest influences on young people's career choices. This page explains more about MyDirections, and how parents and carers can support young people to use the site to explore their career ideas. It also provides an overview of young people's choices at key decision points and information for parents and carers about post-16 options for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
If you are a young person, or the parent or carer of a young person, living in Calderdale or Kirklees, you can contact C+K for careers information, advice and guidance.
Additionally, for parents and carers, we have a page on MyDirections which outlines a young person's options at key decision points and which includes information for parents and carers of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
If you live outside Calderdale and Kirklees and want careers advice, please contact the National Careers Service.
